St Johns Primary school is a 210 pupil primary school with a nursery provision and additional facilities for children with MLD.
The building is planned around a central courtyard which gives a safe and secure area for the staff and children to leave play equipment and resources safely in place overnight. The wide circulation route embraces the courtyard and provides areas for smaller group activities and individual learning with an open aspect to the court.
Each classroom is planned to receive both north and controlled south light to ensure bright and airy teaching spaces and includes a discrete activity area. The large spaces are arranged at the front 'public' side of the building to allow controlled access by visitors. These spaces are wrapped with a curved roof to create a dramatic appearance to the school - which the children have named the ' Rollercoaster'.
